OpenAI — Three price lists under one name: ChatGPT from $8 a month, Business seats at $20 or $100, and an API from $0.10 per million tokens — none of which includes the others.
Short answer: OpenAI sells three separate things. ChatGPT for individuals is Free, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 with $100, $200 and $500 tiers. ChatGPT Business is $20 per standard seat billed annually ($25 monthly) or $100 per premium seat ($125 monthly) for teams of 2 to 200, with Enterprise on custom, credit- or token-based pricing. The API is metered per million tokens: GPT-6 Astra at $10 input, $1 cached and $50 output; GPT-6.1 Sol at $2, $0.10 and $10; GPT-6 Luna at $0.10, $0.01 and $0.50, with Batch processing 50% cheaper and data residency 10% dearer. Image, realtime voice and transcription models have their own rates, and API usage is billed separately from any ChatGPT subscription.

Verdict at a glance
Overall rating: 4.5/5 ★★★★☆
Standout: The API price ladder spans two orders of magnitude on one page — Luna at $0.10 per million input tokens to Astra at $10 — with cached-input and Batch discounts published alongside, so a workload can be costed before a line of code is written.
Watch out: A ChatGPT subscription does not include API access and API spend does not include ChatGPT; the FAQ says so explicitly. Teams paying $20 per Business seat and building on the API are running two bills, and the Pro tiers at $100 to $500 are per person.
OpenAI’s pricing is best understood as three products that happen to share a brand. The first is ChatGPT for individuals: Free gives unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna with limited uploads, images, voice, deep research and Codex; Go at $8 a month expands those limits and may include ads; Plus at $20 adds GPT-6 reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and expanded Codex; and Pro, from $100 a month, offers three usage tiers at $100, $200 and $500 with GPT-6 Astra reasoning, the always-on ‘Dot’ agent, unlimited image generation and Ultrafast responses on the top tier. The second is ChatGPT Business, for 2 to 200 people: $20 per standard seat billed annually or $25 monthly, $100 per premium seat ($125 monthly) with five times the usage and no five-hour limit, SAML SSO, an admin console and no training on business data by default; Enterprise is quoted, with credit-based and token-based options and up to 75% off for nonprofits. The third is the API, which is metered per million tokens and billed on its own account. On 29 September 2026 the text models are GPT-6 Astra at $10 input, $1 cached input and $50 output; GPT-6.1 Sol at $2, $0.10 and $10; and GPT-6 Luna at $0.10, $0.01 and $0.50 — standard rates for contexts under 272K, with Batch at 50% off and data residency at 10% on. Image generation on GPT-Image-2.5 is $8 per million image input tokens and $30 output; GPT-Live-1 voice is $0.05 a minute; GPT-Realtime-2.1 audio is $32 in and $64 out per million tokens; transcription runs from $0.0045 a minute; web search is $10 per thousand calls. The rating is high because the pricing is complete, current and public across all three lists. The half-point held back is for the buyer’s burden: knowing which list applies, that none includes another, and that the individual Pro tiers scale to $500 a month per person.

Overview
OpenAI’s consumer product is ChatGPT, and its individual plans are published on chatgpt.com and in the ChatGPT help documentation. Free costs $0 and includes unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna (subject to abuse guardrails), with limited messages using tools, uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. Go is $8 a month for expanded limits and longer memory, and the page notes it may include ads. Plus is $20 a month and unlocks advanced reasoning with GPT-6, expanded uploads and image creation, deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and expanded Codex usage. Pro starts at $100 a month with three usage tiers — $100, $200 and $500 — adding GPT-6 Astra reasoning, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, the always-on ‘Dot’ agent, unlimited faster image generation, maximum context and, on the $500 tier, Astra Ultrafast access.
ChatGPT Business is the team product for 2 to 200 employees. A standard seat is $20 a month billed annually or $25 monthly; a premium seat is $100 annually or $125 monthly and carries five times the usage with no five-hour limit. Seats can be mixed, and the plan includes all ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex features, connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, SAML SSO and MFA, centralised billing, usage analytics and spend controls, workspace agents and no training on business data by default. Enterprise is custom, adds SCIM, enterprise key management, role-based access, data residency in ten regions, 24/7 priority support and SLAs, and can be bought on credit-based or token-based pricing; nonprofits get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise.
The API is a separate account and a separate bill — the FAQ states that APIs are billed independently of ChatGPT Plus, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Text pricing per million tokens on 29 September 2026: GPT-6 Astra $10 input, $1 cached input, $50 output; GPT-6.1 Sol $2, $0.10, $10; GPT-6 Luna $0.10, $0.01, $0.50, all at standard rates for contexts under 272K. Batch processing is 50% cheaper and data residency 10% dearer; Flex processing trades latency for lower cost and Fast mode pays for speed. GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst and Flare are $8 per million image input tokens, $2 cached and $30 output, with text inputs at $5. Voice: GPT-Live-1 is $0.05 per minute; GPT-Realtime-2.1 is $32 per million audio input tokens, $0.40 cached and $64 output (the mini is $10, $0.30 and $20); GPT-Live-Transcribe $0.017 a minute, GPT-Transcribe $0.0045 and GPT-Realtime-Translate $0.034. Tools: web search $10 per thousand calls with content tokens free, and containers at $0.03 per GB ($1.92 for 64 GB), billed per 20-minute session from 31 March 2026. Scale Tier and Reserved Capacity are enterprise arrangements by contact.

Pricing (as of 2026-09-29)
Model: three price lists — consumer subscription, per-seat business plans and a metered API · Free tier: ⭐ ChatGPT Free · Entry paid: ChatGPT Go $8/mo
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | $0 | Unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna · limited uploads, images, voice, deep research and Codex |
| ChatGPT Go | $8/mo | Expanded messages, uploads, images, voice and memory · ⚠️ may include ads |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | GPT-6 reasoning · projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs · expanded Codex · ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile |
| ChatGPT Pro | From $100/mo | Tiers at $100, $200 and $500 · GPT-6 Astra · Dot always-on agent · unlimited image generation · Ultrafast on the top tier |
| ChatGPT Business | $20/seat/mo annual · $25 monthly | Premium seat $100 annual · $125 monthly with 5x usage · teams of 2–200 · SSO, admin console, no training on data |
| API (per 1M tokens) | GPT-6 Luna $0.10 in · $0.50 out | GPT-6.1 Sol $2 in · $10 out · GPT-6 Astra $10 in · $50 out · cached input at ~10% · Batch −50% · data residency +10% |
⚠️ The API is billed separately from every ChatGPT plan. A team on Business seats that also builds on the API pays both; the API pricing FAQ says so directly.
⚠️ Pro is per person and scales to $500 a month. The $100, $200 and $500 tiers differ in usage and speed (Astra Ultrafast on the top tier), not in which models are available.
⭐ Cached input tokens cost roughly a tenth of fresh input on every text model ($1 vs $10 on Astra, $0.01 vs $0.10 on Luna), and Batch processing halves both input and output for asynchronous jobs — the two levers that most change an API bill.
Rates quoted are standard processing for contexts under 272K tokens. Longer contexts, Fast mode, Flex processing, Scale Tier and Reserved Capacity are priced differently or by contract.
Container pricing changes on 31 March 2026 from per container to per 20-minute session per container, at the same $0.03 per GB.

ChatGPT Business connects to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, and the consumer plans include a built-in browser, apps for deep research and Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions. The API is called from any stack; on this site the common pairings are a backend on Supabase, deployment on Vercel, telephony through Twilio for the realtime voice models, and monitoring in Datadog. Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, is included in every ChatGPT plan rather than sold separately.
