Mem — A genuinely clever notes agent wrapped in the tightest usage metering in the category.

Short answer: Mem is an AI notes agent that reads what you write, extracts tasks and projects, and follows up on them. Its pricing is the thing to understand before anything else: Mem meters the act of creating a note. The free plan allows 25 new notes a month, Plus at $9 a month allows 50, Pro at $29 allows 100, and Pro 2× at $49 allows 200. Voice Mode is capped in hours and open tasks are capped in count. If you write more than three or four notes on a busy day, a $29 note-taking subscription will run out before the month does — and that single design decision determines whether Mem fits you.

Verdict at a glance

Overall rating: 3.0/5 ★★★☆☆
Standout: The agent actually follows through. Mem reviews notes you create or edit, detects tasks and projects on its own, tracks them as open items, and — via Connections — notices when work has already been completed elsewhere. Nothing else in this comparison closes that loop.
Watch out: ⚠️ Creating a note is a metered action. 100 new notes a month on the $29 Pro plan works out to roughly three a day. For a note-taking application, rationing notes is an unusual thing to ask a customer to plan around.

Mem rates 3.0, and the split is unusually clean: the product idea is strong and the pricing model fights it. What Mem does — reading your notes, finding the tasks buried in them, tracking them as open work, and using connected sources like Gmail, Slack or Todoist to notice what is already done — is a real answer to the problem that notes apps create piles nobody revisits. But every one of those capabilities is rationed, and the rationing reaches the base action of writing something down. Pro at $29 a month buys 100 messages, 100 new notes, tracking across 100 notes, 50 open tasks and 25 hours of Voice Mode. That is a workable allowance for deliberate, curated use and an unworkable one for anybody who captures freely. Compare Notion at $10 a member with unlimited pages, or Obsidian at nothing at all, and the question becomes whether the agent is worth accepting a quota to write. For a lot of people it will not be. For someone who keeps few, dense notes and wants them actively worked rather than stored, it might.

Overview

Mem’s premise is that the problem with notes is not capture but follow-through. Rather than giving you a better place to put things, it runs an agent over what you write: it reviews the notes you create or edit during the month, detects tasks and projects automatically, tracks them as open items, and prompts you about them. On the Pro tier it adds Connections to external sources such as Gmail, Slack or Todoist, which it uses both as context and to work out when something has already been done elsewhere. Custom Routines extend this to scheduled work — preparing a briefing, doing research, organising notes or sending reminders on a cadence you define.

The pricing is where a buyer needs to concentrate, because almost every dimension of the product is metered. The free plan allows 25 messages to Mem, 25 new notes a month, task tracking across up to 25 notes, 15 open tasks and projects at once, and 3 hours of Voice Mode. Plus at $9 a month doubles most of that to 50 messages, 50 notes, 50 tracked notes, 25 open tasks and 10 hours of voice. Pro at $29 reaches 100 messages, 100 notes, 100 tracked notes, 50 open tasks, 25 hours of voice, and adds one Custom Routine and one Connection. Pro 2× at $49 doubles Pro again to 200, 200, 200, 100 open tasks, 50 voice hours, two Routines and two Connections.

Two details are easy to miss and both matter. First, the ladder runs much further than it used to: Mem now publishes seven steps, from Free through Plus at $9 and Pro at $29 up to Pro 20× at $199, and Pro 20× is the only tier that can buy Extra Usage in $50 monthly increments. That tier was referenced in the FAQ without a price as recently as September; it is now on the pricing page. Each $50 unit adds 500 messages, 500 new notes, tracking across 500 active notes, 250 open tasks, 5 routines, 250 routine executions, 5 connections and 125 Voice Mode hours. Second, every rate shown is monthly; Mem publishes no annual discount, which makes it more expensive than it looks against competitors whose headline prices assume annual billing.

Free $0 25 messages to Mem · 25 new notes/month · task tracking across 25 notes · 15 open tasks and projects · 3 hours Voice Mode
Mem Plus $9/mo 50 messages · 50 new notes/month · tracking across 50 notes · 25 open tasks · 10 hours Voice Mode
Mem Pro $29/mo ⭐ Marked recommended · 100 messages · 100 new notes/month · tracking across 100 notes · 50 open tasks · 25 hours Voice Mode
Mem Pro 2× $49/mo 200 messages · 200 new notes/month · tracking across 200 notes · 100 open tasks · 50 hours Voice Mode
Mem Pro 5× $99/mo 500 messages · 125 hours Voice Mode
Mem Pro 10× $149/mo 1,000 messages · 250 hours Voice Mode
Mem Pro 20× $199/mo 2,000 messages · 500 hours Voice Mode · ⭐ the only tier that can buy Extra Usage, at $50 a month per unit (+125 voice hours each)

⚠️ Note creation is metered. This is the fact that decides whether Mem suits you: 100 new notes a month on the $29 Pro plan is about three a day. For comparison, Notion at $10 a member and Obsidian at $0 both place no limit on how much you write.

⚠️ All published rates are monthly and Mem lists no annual discount. Competitors’ headline prices in this comparison — Notion at $10, Craft at $6.40 — are annual rates, so the real gap is wider than the numbers suggest.

⚠️ Connections are capped at one on Pro and two on Pro 2×. Since Connections are what let Mem see whether work is already done elsewhere, that is a tight limit on the feature that distinguishes the product.

⭐ Deep Search and templates are included on every plan including free. Mem confirms that plan limits apply to how much you create and ask for, not to which features you can reach — an honest structure, even if the amounts are small.

⚠️ Extra Usage is real but restricted: $50 a month buys 500 messages, 500 new notes, 500 tracked notes, 250 open tasks, 5 routines, 250 routine executions, 5 connections and 125 voice hours — and Mem states this is available to Pro 20× customers, now published at $199 a month.

Ratings breakdown

Mem Review: Ratings breakdown
Criterion Score Why
Ease Of Use 4.0/5 Capture is genuinely frictionless across app, voice, WhatsApp and email
Features 3.5/5 The agent loop is distinctive; the caps blunt it
Value 2.0/5 ⚠️ $29/month for 100 notes, against unlimited pages at $10 elsewhere
Support 3.0/5 Help centre and standard support; no published SLA or team tier

Pros

  • ⭐ The agent finds tasks in your notes and tracks them without being asked
  • ⭐ Connections let Mem notice when work is already done elsewhere
  • Capture works from the app, push-to-talk, floating chat, WhatsApp and email
  • Voice Mode produces a structured transcript organised into notes, not a raw dump
  • Deep Search and templates are on every plan, including free
  • Custom Routines turn the agent into scheduled work rather than on-demand chat
  • Plan limits are published clearly and explained item by item
  • Data export is addressed in the vendor’s own FAQ

Cons

  • ⚠️ Creating a note is metered — 100 a month on the $29 plan
  • ⚠️ No annual billing discount published; every rate is monthly
  • ⚠️ Connections capped at 1 on Pro and 2 on Pro 2×
  • ⚠️ Extra Usage is locked to Pro 20× at $199, the top of a seven-step ladder
  • Extra Usage top-ups are restricted to Pro 20× tier
  • No published team, business or enterprise plan — this is a personal tool
  • No SSO, audit logging or admin controls of any kind

Who it’s for

  • People who keep few, considered notes and want them acted on rather than filed
  • Anyone whose problem is forgotten commitments buried in meeting notes
  • Voice-first capturers who think aloud and want structure produced for them
  • Solo professionals willing to pay for follow-through rather than storage

Who it’s not for

  • Prolific note takers — the monthly note cap will bind quickly
  • Teams of any size; there is no published team or enterprise plan
  • Buyers who need annual billing or predictable per-seat costs
  • Anyone who wants an archive they can grow indefinitely without watching a meter

Best use cases

  • Turning meeting notes into tracked commitments without manual task entry
  • Voice capture after calls, transcribed and organised into structured notes
  • A weekly routine that prepares a briefing from the past week’s notes
  • Catching tasks that were completed in Slack or Todoist and closing them automatically
  • Capturing from WhatsApp or email into a single searchable personal store

Integrations

Mem calls its integrations Connections, and treats them as more than data pipes — a Connection to Gmail, Slack or Todoist gives the agent context, lets it detect tasks in that source, and lets it recognise when work has already been completed. That is the most interesting integration behaviour in this comparison. The constraint is quantity: Connections are capped at one on Pro and two on Pro 2×, so you are choosing which single source the agent gets to see. Capture also arrives through WhatsApp and email, which function as lightweight inbound channels without counting as Connections. Mem publishes no general API or MCP endpoint on its pricing page, which contrasts with Craft — where API and MCP are available even on the free plan — and with Superhuman Docs, where MCP is open to any Doc Maker.

All figures are vendor-published and verified on 2026-09-07. Mem’s rates are monthly because it publishes no annual option; Tana, Notion and Obsidian entry prices are annual rates, which flatters them slightly against Mem in a straight column comparison.

Alternatives

Tana is the closest competitor in spirit — also AI-first, also metered — but it has repositioned around meetings, and its Pro tier starts at $20 per user per month on early-bird annual pricing, more than double Mem Plus. Notion at $10 per member billed annually is the pragmatic alternative: no agent chasing your tasks, but unlimited pages and a real team plan, with AI sold separately at $10 per 1,000 credits. Obsidian is the alternative for anyone whose reaction to note metering is that notes should not be metered at all — it is free, unlimited and stores everything as Markdown on your own disk, at the cost of doing your own follow-through. Craft sits nearby at $6.40 a month billed yearly with far better presentation and a much lighter AI allowance. Mem’s case rests entirely on whether the agent’s follow-through is worth a quota; there is no other tool here that does the same job.

Recent changes

Mem’s plan structure as verified on 2026-09-07 is Free, Mem Plus at $9 a month, Mem Pro at $29, and Mem Pro 2× at $49, all billed monthly with no annual discount published. Each tier is defined by explicit allowances rather than feature gates: messages to Mem, new notes per month, how many notes the agent reviews for tasks, how many open tasks and projects it tracks at once, and Voice Mode hours. Custom Routines and Connections appear first at Pro, one of each, doubling at Pro 2×. Mem Pro 20× at $199 a month is eligible for Extra Usage in $50 monthly increments, each unit adding 500 messages, 500 new notes, tracking across 500 active notes, 250 open tasks, 5 routines, 250 routine executions, 5 connections and 125 Voice Mode hours — but that tier’s own price is not published on the pricing page, which is a genuine gap for anyone trying to budget beyond Pro 2×.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mem cost?

Free is $0 with 25 messages and 25 new notes a month. Mem Plus is $9 a month for 50 of each. Mem Pro is $29 a month for 100 of each, plus one Custom Routine and one Connection. Mem Pro 2× is $49 a month for 200 of each with two Routines and two Connections. All rates are monthly; Mem publishes no annual discount. Above Pro 2× the ladder continues at $99 (Pro 5×), $149 (Pro 10×) and $199 (Pro 20×), the last being the only tier that can buy Extra Usage.

Does Mem really limit how many notes I can create?

Yes. New notes per month is a metered allowance on every plan: 25 on Free, 50 on Plus, 100 on Pro and 200 on Pro 2×. Mem states directly that plan limits apply to how much you create, ask Mem to do, and keep actively tracked. This is the most important thing to understand before subscribing, because 100 notes a month on a $29 plan is roughly three a day.

What happens if I hit a plan limit?

Mem says it will show you when you are approaching a limit so you can move to a larger plan before work is interrupted. Top-ups are not universally available: Mem states that Mem Pro 20× customers can add Extra Usage in $50 monthly increments. Each $50 unit adds 500 messages, 500 new notes, tracking across 500 active notes, 250 open tasks, 5 routines, 250 routine executions, 5 connections and 125 Voice Mode hours.

What is a Connection, and why are there so few?

A Connection links Mem to an external source such as Gmail, Slack or Todoist. Mem uses it as context, detects tasks and projects in it, and works out when work has already been completed there. It is arguably the product’s best feature, which makes the cap notable: one Connection on Pro and two on Pro 2×. You are effectively choosing the single source the agent gets to watch.

Is there a Mem team or business plan?

Not one that Mem publishes. Every tier on the pricing page is described in personal terms — Pro 2× is explicitly framed as capacity for a busier personal workflow — and there is no published per-seat team plan, SSO, admin console or audit logging. If you need Mem across a team, that is a question for their sales or support rather than something you can price yourself.

How does Mem compare to Notion or Obsidian?

It is solving a different problem. Notion at $10 per member billed annually gives unlimited pages, real collaboration and a team plan, but will not chase your tasks. Obsidian is free and unlimited with notes stored as Markdown on your own disk, but does everything on your initiative. Mem is the only one of the three where an agent reads what you wrote and follows up — and the only one that meters how much you can write.

Can I export my data from Mem?

Mem addresses data export directly in its pricing FAQ, alongside questions on how data is stored and how private it is. Given that this is a hosted product with no local file format — unlike Obsidian, where the notes are already files on your disk — anyone planning to keep years of notes in Mem should test the export path early rather than assume it, and confirm what format it produces.
