llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root that tells AI models what your site is and where your key content lives. It is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort AI-search moves, and most sites still do not have one. Here is how to make yours.
Steps
- List your most important pages: homepage, core products or services, key docs, and top resources.
- Write a one-line, plain-language description for each.
- Add a short summary of what your business does at the top, in a blockquote.
- Format it in simple Markdown: an H1 with your name, the summary, then
##sections grouping your links. - Publish it as a text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt (same place as robots.txt).
- Verify it loads and that every link resolves.
Tips
Keep it curated, not exhaustive — point models at your best pages, not every URL. Update it when you launch important pages. For maximum coverage, some sites also publish an llms-full.txt with full page text.
