How Answer Engines Choose the Answer

Answer engines select the passage that answers the exact question most concisely, most authoritatively, and is easiest to extract. Understanding that process tells you precisely what to optimize.

The selection process

For a given query, an answer engine identifies candidate pages, finds the passage on each that best matches the question, and promotes the one that is clearest, most trustworthy, and cleanest to lift. Four things decide the winner:

  • Question match — the passage directly answers the specific question, using language close to how it was asked.
  • Conciseness — a self-contained answer, often 40 to 60 words, that stands alone without surrounding context.
  • Authority — the page and source are trusted for this topic.
  • Structure — headings, lists, tables, and schema make the answer easy to identify and format.

How to influence it

You cannot control the engine, but you control every input: put the question in a heading, answer it immediately and concisely, prove authority, and structure the page for extraction. That is the whole of AEO.
