The one-sentence answer

When the answer is delivered on the results surface, the prize is no longer the click — it is the citation. Winning means being the source the answer engine quotes, links, and recommends.

This is the action companion to the DigiJaws zero-click primer. It turns the mechanics into a playbook: what AI engines actually cite, and the six moves that make your pages the cited answer. It draws on published 2025–2026 citation research and standard, well-documented technical practice.

1. The shift: from ranking to citation

For two decades, SEO optimized for a position. Answer engines optimize for a source. You can rank #1 and never be quoted; you can sit at #8 and be the sentence the AI Overview lifts. The new objective is to be selected, quoted, and named — because being named in the answer is the new front page, click or no click.

2. What AI engines actually cite

Recent studies of millions of AI answers converge on a few durable patterns worth designing around:

  • Community and reference win. Reddit is the single most-cited source across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, with Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn, and editorial outlets close behind.
  • Brand-owned pages are under-represented. Engines lean on earned and third-party media far more than on your own site — so off-site presence matters as much as on-site optimization.
  • Citations concentrate at the top. ChatGPT cites roughly 15% of the pages it retrieves, and those citations cluster in the first ~30% of the page — front-loading the answer is not stylistic, it is mechanical.
  • Engines disagree with each other. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews name the same tools about 32% of the time but cite the same pages only about 4% of the time; AI Overviews cite ~16 sources per answer versus ~10 for ChatGPT. You have to win each engine, not “AI” in general.

3. The playbook

1 — Answer-first content structure

Lead with the answer in the first sentence, then support it. Use question-shaped headings and short, self-contained, quotable statements an engine can lift without stitching. Because citations cluster in the first third of a page, put the definitive answer there — not in a conclusion.

2 — Structured data

Mark up pages with schema.org types that map to answer formats: FAQPage for Q&A, Article for references, HowTo for procedures, Organization and Breadcrumb for context. Structured data does not guarantee citation, but it makes your content unambiguous to the systems deciding what to quote.

3 — Entity clarity

Make it trivial for a machine to know who you are. Maintain a complete Organization schema with sameAs links, a consistent name everywhere, and — where warranted — a Wikipedia and Wikidata presence. Entities the graph recognizes get recommended; strings it doesn’t, get skipped.

4 — Machine-readable trust

Publish clean, semantic HTML; offer an llms.txt index and plain-text or markdown mirrors of key documents so crawlers ingest you without wrestling a styled DOM. Surface real author identity and evidence (dates, citations, data) — the E-E-A-T signals engines use as trust proxies.

5 — Earn third-party mentions

Because engines under-cite brand-owned content, invest where they do look: helpful, non-spammy participation in community platforms; earned editorial and PR; genuine reviews and comparisons; and presence in the reference and list sources your category’s answers already pull from.

6 — Freshness and citable data

Keep visible updated dates, and give engines something worth quoting: original statistics, clearly-stated figures, and one-sentence claims that stand alone. Proprietary data and crisp numbers are disproportionately cited because they are hard to synthesize from elsewhere.

4. Measure whether it is working

Optimization without measurement is guessing. Track your share of AI answers across a fixed prompt set, per engine, over time, and pair it with the first-party AI-referral and fragment capture described in the companion, Measuring & Attributing AI Traffic. Rising citations should precede rising AI-referred, high-converting demand.

5. The checklist
