What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how often AI answer engines name or cite your brand when someone asks a question in your category. Unlike a search ranking it is not a position in a list. An engine composes an answer, names two or three brands, and stops. You are either one of them or you are not.
That binary is what makes it hard to notice. When an AI answer leaves you out, nothing in your analytics records it — there is no impression, no position and no click to be missing. The only way to know is to ask the engines directly, on purpose, and write down what they say.
Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?
No, though they share a foundation. A page still has to be crawlable, indexable and trustworthy for either to work. What differs is the prize and how it is won.
| SEO | AI search visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| The prize | A position in a list | Being named in the answer |
| The reward | A click | A citation or a recommendation |
| Judged on | Relevance and authority of the page | Whether a clean passage answers the question |
| Feedback | Rankings and clicks in analytics | Nothing, unless you measure it deliberately |
| Failure looks like | Position 11 | Silence |
A page can rank first for a keyword and never appear in the AI answer to the same question, because ranking and extraction are judged on different things. Ranking rewards the page. Extraction rewards the passage.
How do I check my AI visibility?
Two checks, and you need both. They answer different questions and most people only run the first.
- The structural check — can an engine cite you? Crawler access, structured data, answer-first content, llms.txt, heading structure. This takes seconds and it is free: run the AI visibility checker on any page.
- The outcome check — does an engine cite you? Put a real buying question from your category to the engines and record which brands they name. This is the only number that reflects the result, and it is the one almost nobody tracks.
An audit that always passes tells you nothing about whether you are being named. A tracker with no audit tells you that you are absent without telling you why.

How is AI search visibility measured?
By share of model: take the questions your buyers actually ask, put them to the engines on a schedule, and count how often each brand is named. One run is noise, because engines return slightly different answers from one run to the next. The meaningful figure is the trend across repeated runs of the same questions.
Here is ours, measured on 10 September 2026 across three buying-intent questions in our own category:
| Brand | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush | 3 of 3 | 100% |
| Ahrefs | 2 of 3 | 67% |
| Conductor | 1 of 3 | 33% |
| DigiJaws | 0 of 3 | 0% |
We publish our own zero because a measurement product that only shows flattering numbers is not worth trusting. It is also the clearest illustration of the point: we rank for some of these terms and are still named in none of the answers.
How do you improve AI search visibility?
Six things, in rough order of return. The first four are on your own site and move within weeks. The last two are slower because they depend on sources you do not control.
- Let AI crawlers in. Check robots.txt for rules blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. A page that cannot be fetched cannot be cited. In our scan of 174 B2B SaaS sites only 1.7% block any AI crawler — so this is rarely the problem, but it is absolute when it is.
- Answer in the first 40 words. Put the direct answer immediately under the heading that asks the question. Context and caveats go after it.
- Mark up genuine questions. FAQPage schema makes a question and its answer a discrete, quotable pair. 90% of the sites we scanned have none — the largest unclaimed advantage in the category.
- Write self-contained passages. A paragraph opening with “this means that…” cannot be lifted alone. Define terms on first use.
- Keep your brand facts consistent. Organization schema, the same naming everywhere, a published llms.txt. This is what lets a model connect a citation to a brand rather than a URL.
- Get mentioned where models already read. Roundups, comparisons and reference pages feed entity recognition, and that is what decides whether you are named unprompted.
Where to go next
- LLM SEO — the umbrella discipline, and how its two halves fit together.
- Answer engine optimization — for extracted answers: AI Overviews, snippets, voice.
- Generative engine optimization — for engines that compose an answer and cite sources.
- AI brand monitoring — how to track which brands get named instead of you.
- The Prompt Observatory — your questions, put to the engines weekly, from $49 a month.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how often AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity name or cite your brand when someone asks a question in your category. Unlike a search ranking it is not a position in a list — you are either named in the answer or you are not.
How do I check my AI visibility?
Two checks, and you need both. A structural check tells you whether an engine can reach, parse and quote your pages — crawler access, schema, answer-first content, llms.txt — and takes seconds. An outcome check puts a real buying question to the engines and records which brands they name. The first tells you whether you can be cited; only the second tells you whether you are.
How do you improve AI search visibility?
Let AI crawlers in, answer the question in the first 40 words under each heading, mark up genuine questions with FAQPage schema, write passages that can be quoted without surrounding context, keep your brand facts consistent everywhere, and get mentioned on sources the models already read. The first four are on your own site and move within weeks; the last two are slower.
Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?
No. SEO competes for a position in a list of links, where the reward is a click. AI search visibility competes for inclusion in a composed answer, where the reward is being named. They share a foundation, but a page can rank first and never be named in the AI answer to the same question.
How is AI search visibility measured?
By share of model: take the questions your buyers actually ask, put them to the engines on a schedule, and count how often each brand is named. One run is noise because engines vary between runs, so the meaningful number is the trend across repeated runs of the same questions.
How long does it take to improve AI search visibility?
Structural fixes such as crawler access, schema and answer-first rewrites can change what an engine extracts within days to weeks, because retrieval re-reads pages often. Being recognised as a brand worth naming moves far more slowly and depends on being mentioned across sources you do not control.
